|The treater power required for a specific product is a function of the material being treated,
the treat level required, the area to be treated and the line speed.
Generalization regarding treat levels and the treatability of materials is often difficult.
However, enough empirical data exists to predict with confidence the effect of a given
amount of power on the more common substrates under most standard line conditions.
Graphs follow for various materials. Web width in inches is plotted against line speed in
feet per minute. The power required, in kilowatts, is indicated on the field of the graph.
The graphs have been prepared for a nominal 40-42 dyne level as is commonly specified for
printing purposes. Higher treat levels will require more power.

|The electrical power required by the corona treating process is supplied by a high frequency
generator and a high voltage transformer. Ordinary 60 cycle utility power is converted to
the higher frequency and higher voltage needed to generate corona efficiently. The corona is
then presented to the web by the treater station; i.e., the dielectric covered treater roll / air
gap / electrode configuration.
Full-rated generator power can be delivered to the web if the electrical components of the
circuit are sized to match the generator power and frequency. Variables are:
1. The effective treat area of the electrode shoe.
2. The dielectric constant of the electrical insulation.
3. The thickness of the electrical insulation.
A number of manufacturers supply good industrial grade, solid-state electrical generators
and transformers. Sizes range from 0.5 kilowatts to 30 kilowatts. Operating frequencies
range from 8 kilohertz to 50 kilohertz. Efficient corona treating systems are possible with
most generators if careful attention is given to the electrical design details of the station and
